Pueblo Breast Augmentation Surgery:
Saline vs Silicone Breast Implants

When our patients from Pueblo visit us for a breast augmentation surgery consultation, they often ask us if they should choose saline or silicone breast implants. Both implants have been approved by the FDA for breast enlargement as well as reconstruction in women.

We see many patients from Pueblo for breast augmentation surgery because its close to Colorado Springs and gives the patient an opportunity to discuss the procedure with several plastic surgeons. This allows the patient to find a surgeon she feels comfortable with.

The average life expectancy for both saline and silicone implants is about 17 years. For cosmetic breast enlargement surgery, there are pros and cons for either implant.

Advantages of Saline and Silicone Breast Implants

Saline implants advantages are:

  • Smaller incision needed for insertion
  • Lowest incidence of capsular contracture (hardening of the breast)
  • Easier to tell when the implant needs to be replaced (deflation)
  • Easier to replace after deflation occurs
  • The implant costs less than silicone implants

Silicone implant advantages:

  • More natural feel in patients with very little breast tissue of their own
  • The incidence of wrinkles, ripples or folds that can be seen or felt is less than with saline implants
  • Worldwide silicone implants are used in 90% of patients

Disadvantages of Saline and Silicone Breast Implants

Saline implant disadvantages

  • Less natural feel in patients that have little breast tissue of their own
  • More chance of visible or palpable wrinkles or folds primarily in very thin patients
  • The valve that is used to fill the implant can fail, though this is rare

Silicone implant disadvantages

  • Silicone implants are more expensive than saline implants because they have to be prefilled with medical grade silicone before leaving the factory
  • A larger incision is needed to insert the prefilled silicone implant
  • There is a slightly higher incidence of capsular contracture or hardening of the breast with silicone implants
  • When the implants shell eventually fails, it may require an MRI to identify it
  • Replacement following a silicone implant failure requires more surgical dissection than with saline implants
